Supporting the West Coast region: NZIMMR will ensure that its total package of activities support development, infrastructure, building of knowledge and capability and employment on the West Coast i.e. not every activity will support the West Coast directly but the total sum will support the West Coast significantly.
Non-partisan: NZIMMR will not form an exclusive collaboration with any organisation beyond project scale. NZIMMR may at times work on specific projects with single organisations where this generally forwards the aims of NZIMMR, although it will have a degree of conflict with point iii. above. Therefore, this will not be the dominant mode of NZIMMR activity.
Syndicated research: NZIMMR will seek to foster syndicated research in order to encourage industry collaboration.
Commercially viable: NZIMMR shall operate in such a way as to ensure its long-term commercial viability, on the proviso that commercial viability can be maintained while meeting the intent of NZIMMR in terms of principles viii., ix. and x. below. If viability cannot be achieved while holding those principles then NZIMMR will be wound up.
Need-driven: NZIMMR will focus on research areas where there is demonstrated international demand for the minerals/materials that are the subject of the research and the minerals/materials present a niche market of an appropriate scale and type for NZ to target, where NZ will have a competitive advantage.
Minerals to Materials research-driven: NZIMMR is specifically focusing on minerals TO materials research, as opposed to minerals AND materials research. In other words, the focus is on research that will facilitate value addition through minerals being transformed into materials, rather than simply research on both minerals and materials. Research activities and plans will reflect the minerals to materials intent.
Environmental sustainability: minimising impact on the environment from both a indigenous and non-indigenous perspective will be considered in every activity of NZIMMR, all research project proposals will explicitly state how environmental sustainability has been taken into account and environmental sustainability will be included in NZIMMR reporting at every level.
Promote diversity in governance, management and workforce: When appointing individuals to governance, management and staff positions, NZIMMR will constantly consider how to promote diversity in terms of age, gender and approach.
